Spurs forward Kawhi Leonard was phenomenal Wednesday night against the Miami Heat with 32 points, 8 rebounds and his usual terrific defense. He was so good that teammate Kyle Anderson got excited and called for Leonard to win the MVP after the game on Twitter.
Leonard winning the MVP is long shot, though. Basketball Reference’s MVP Award Tracker gives him just a 4.2 percent chance, way behind Stephen Curry‘s 70.7 percent.
Leonard loses the “best player on best team” argument that many use when picking the MVP and his numbers don’t stack up well compared to Curry’s. Nothing wrong with Leonard’s stats. It’s just that Curry’s numbers are historically good.
