Democrat Hillary Clinton remains at No. 1 among presidential candidates when it comes to fundraising, but she comes only at the No. 5 spot when looking at money coming from NBA donors alone, per HoopsHype research.
Clinton has actually received backing from more NBA personalities than all other candidates combined, but it amounts to little compared to the massive financial support some owners have thrown behind a bunch of Republican candidates. Twenty-five people involved in the NBA business have donated a combined $87,100 to the Clinton campaign, while Cavs owner Dan Gilbert alone gave $750,000 to the now-defunct Chris Christie campaign.
Some takeaways from our research:
* Clinton is the only Democratic presidential candidate receiving NBA money. Bernie Sanders has not seen a penny, according to our research.
* Well-funded former Florida governor Jeb Bush, who suspended his campaign last week, was the No. 2 Republican in NBA donations with over $300,000, most of them coming from the DeVos family, owners of the Orlando Magic.
* Richard DeVos has given a combined $765,800 to six different Republican candidates.
* Kings’ Vivek Ranadive and Pacers’ Herb Simon are the lone owners donating to the Clinton campaign. All other owner donations went to Republicans. (Simon gave money to the Rubio campaign too).
* Donald Trump is the star of the presidential campaign, but he’s gotten no traction in the NBA. Not even Spencer Hawes has donated.
* Not a single active NBA player has donated to a presidential candidate yet. Caron Butler gave money to the Democratic National Committee last June, though.
