NBA season preview: New York Knicks

knicks-16

STAYING: Louis Amundson, Carmelo Anthony, Kristaps Porzingis, Kyle O’Quinn, Lance Thomas and Sasha Vujacic.

ADDED: Ron Baker (Wichita State), Willy Hernangomez (Real Madrid), Justin Holiday (Chicago), Brandon Jennings (Orlando), Mindaugas Kuzminskas (Unicaja Malaga), Courtney Lee (Charlotte), Maurice Ndour (Real Madrid), Joakim Noah (Chicago), Marshall Plumlee (Duke), Chasson Randle (Nymburk), Derrick Rose (Chicago) and JP Tokoto (Oklahoma City Blue).

GONE: Arron Afflalo (Sacramento), Jose Manuel Calderon (LA Lakers), Cleanthony Early, Langston Galloway (New Orleans), Jerian Grant (Chicago), Robin Lopez (Chicago), Kevin Seraphin (Indiana), Derrick Williams (Miami) and Tony Wroten (Memphis).

STRENGTHS: A scoring machine called Carmelo Anthony … Whether in the post, driving to the basket or shooting from the perimeter, Melo is always a threat … Kristaps Porzingis is already one of Anthony’s most accomplished sidekicks in New York … His athleticism and shooting skills had Knicks fans salivating last season, especially early on … Clear star potential there … With their inside-outside game, the duo can be a matchup nightmare … They have many players who can create their own shot … If he can get close his old form, Joakim Noah is an impact player on the defensive end … They had pretty good intimidation around the rim already … Jeff Hornacek > Derek Fisher.

WEAKNESSES: More names than game? … The addition of Derrick Rose and Noah would have been way more impressive a few years back … They have struggled with efficiency and/or health lately … Aside from on-court questions, there’s a massive off-the-court distraction for Rose this season … Hard to be optimistic about this gamble by the Knicks … New York has a lot of players with a score-first mentality … Ball movement and shot selection might be areas of concern … There are no big three-point threats in the backcourt outside of Courtney Lee, who’s no Stephen Curry … Three of the five likely starters are new to the club … It could take a while for the team to gel … Too many alpha males? … Franchise is not known for its winning culture.

PREDICTION: 3rd in the Atlantic Division, 8th in the Eastern Conference.
