So, it turns out there are other smoke alarms (other than the Nest) that aren’t visually offensive. Case in point, the Kapu*: it’s a photoelectric smoke alarm. The casing of the Kapu acts a press switch, so you can test it and silence false alarms without any tiny push buttons. It installs via 3M tape, too, no tools required.
*And it’s not even new- it was awarded the Red Dot Design Award 2011.
